Progress Releases OpenEdge 12
March 07, 2019

Progress announced the latest release of Progress OpenEdge, the company's flagship application development platform.

Built for speed, the 12.0 release, available today, can deliver up to a three-fold improvement in database throughput performance, and unprecedented responsiveness and scalability.

As part of Progress’ strategy to help businesses accelerate digital innovation, OpenEdge 12 also provides a foundation for application evolution, with advanced features and functionality that give applications the always-on availability, agility and scale required to support modern applications.

With the release of Progress OpenEdge 12 platform, Progress continues its mission to offer customers and partners the tools and technology necessary to stay competitive as the demands on business applications evolve.

“Many enterprises around the globe are operating with business-critical applications that were developed years ago, and struggle to continuously deliver application functionality that will help them, and their customers, evolve to meet increasing business demands,” said John Ainsworth, SVP, Core Products, Progress. “Designed to support the needs of business-critical application delivery and deployment, OpenEdge 12 is the highest performing, highest quality, most secure and productive version of OpenEdge ever released.”

OpenEdge 12 offers:

- Performance and Scale: Enterprises are faced with an ever-evolving database management landscape as the sheer velocity and volume of data sources multiplies and device interaction explodes. With the delivery in OpenEdge 12 of multi-threading, server-side multi-table JOINs, and locking delay improvements, companies can not only expect up to 200% throughput of data, but also improvements in overall application performance, reduction in catastrophic outage data loss to sub-second levels, more efficient SQL query resolution and more.

- Agile DevOps: OpenEdge 12 helps organizations grow their DevOps team into a streamlined, agile unit. New features include Docker containerization deployment for Progress® Application Server (PAS) for OpenEdge® platform, which allows developers to increase deployment efficiency, make frequent updates and improvements, and maintain higher availability of applications while improving resource utilization. Access to source code analysis tooling and improvements to the performance Profiler help produce a more robust, stable and consistent codebase for easier collaborative development.

- Continuous Availability: “Always on” is a necessity for businesses across the globe. As more enterprises look to extend the availability of their mission-critical applications and data, they are under tremendous pressure to ensure the uptime of their systems. Downtime, even if it’s a matter of minutes, can result in substantial costs to the enterprise. Through new features such as Replication AI file streaming, instrumentation-free performance profiling, and PAS for OpenEdge HealthScanner, businesses can speed error detection and resolution, minimize unplanned disruptions to their applications and maximize uptime for their users.

- Application Security: Continuously evolving the security capabilities of an application is critical for both protecting the system from unauthorized users and staying in compliance with regulatory mandates, the latest being GDPR. OpenEdge 12 includes updates to the latest version of Spring Security and OpenSSL to strengthen security in PAS for OpenEdge and fortify secure communications. More secure file permission on various utilities helps ensure authorized users have access, and high priority issues identified by internal security scans are addressed for improved infrastructure security.
