Docker Announces Commercial Partnership with Microsoft to Drive Adoption of Containerized Applications
September 26, 2016

Docker announced a commercial partnership with Microsoft to enable enterprises to modernize their application environments and create hybrid Windows applications using Commercially Supported Docker Engine (CS Docker Engine) and Docker Datacenter with Windows Server 2016.

As part of a new agreement, Microsoft and Docker will make the CS Docker Engine available to Windows Server 2016 customers at no additional cost. This will enable organizations to innovate more rapidly and accelerate time to value when building, shipping and running distributed applications. Docker Datacenter helps organizations manage a heterogeneous environment of Windows and Linux workloads, running in both on premises and cloud based infrastructure, such as Microsoft Azure. As part of the commercial relationship, Microsoft will provide enterprise support options for CS Docker Engine, backed by Docker, Inc.

“Over the last two years, we have partnered with Docker, a leader in containerization, to bring the Docker platform to Windows Server as well as the Microsoft Azure cloud ecosystem,” said Scott Guthrie, Microsoft EVP, Cloud + Enterprise. “With today’s announcement, we are deepening our commitment to creating an open platform, bringing together Windows Server and Linux to help developers and IT professionals deliver new levels of innovation.”

As part of the agreement, Docker and Microsoft will jointly promote Docker Datacenter, further enabling IT Pros to better secure the Windows software supply chain and manage containerized Windows workloads, whether on-premises, in the cloud or in a hybrid environment. Docker Datacenter delivers an integrated platform for developers and IT to collaborate, bringing improved security, policy and controls to the application lifecycle without sacrificing agility or application portability. With Windows Server Containers and Docker Datacenter, IT Pros have the enterprise ready management they need to bring legacy applications to a modern application platform and allow developers to ship 13X faster while giving operations teams the ability to seamlessly migrate these workloads to the cloud.

“As the strategic, trusted partner to enterprise IT, Microsoft is further demonstrating its leadership in this market by bringing the agility, portability, and security benefits of the Docker platform to the Windows Server community,” said Ben Golub CEO of Docker. “Docker and Microsoft are the first to provide enterprise IT with an end-to-end platform, from development to operations, for securing the software supply chain and managing containerized Windows and Linux workloads. Together, we provide a framework for building multi-platform modern applications with exceptional velocity and global scalability.”

The first version of the CS Docker Engine for Windows Server 2016 will be available for download at General Availability of Windows Server 2016 in mid-October.

Docker Datacenter is currently available for Linux environments and a beta for Windows Server environments is planned for Q4 2016.
